They say hindsight is 20-20. It is this concept that fuels one of the most active volunteers in Arts.

Since graduating, Oliver Zihlmann (BA’05) has provided guidance to more than 100 students. While that may seem like a daunting figure, Zihlmann thinks mentoring is quite simple.

“What would you have wanted to know as a student that you know now?” asks Zihlmann, Development Coordinator for the UBC Faculty of Applied Science.

Whether chatting with students at an event, meeting them during lunch, or providing tips via e-mail, this International Relations alumnus is keen to apply his volunteer philosophy.

“It really boils down to people, relationships and sharing knowledge,” says Zihlmann who enjoys learning about students’ stories and developing relationships with them in a professional capacity. Discussion topics often include managing student debt, paying your dues in the workplace, and gaining experiences that could lead to a dream job.

“It’s not earth shattering, ground-breaking or mind-blowing advice,” says Zihlmann, who has volunteered with the Arts Co-op Program, Career Services and International Relations Students Association. “It’s just some basic things to think about.”

Zihlmann thinks that students and professionals are not entirely different. “At the end of the day, we’re all looking for connections or ideas. And I think we all want to be inspired.”

While students undoubtedly benefit from the exchange, Zihlmann believes that mentors also have a lot to gain. “Mentoring offers a refreshing perspective. It has inspired me to do the best in my job and to think of ways that I can continue to learn.”

The CIHR Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP) provides operating funds to support research proposals in all areas of health research including randomized controlled trials. In each competition this is equivalent to approximately $2.5M per year for five-year grants. Individual grant applications requesting a total of $12.5M or more from CIHR will be withdrawn. Equipment will not be funded.

Leveraging public investments in higher education research and development to stimulate innovation

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

describe the state of knowledge about international best practices in leveraging public investments in R&D in the higher education sector in order to stimulate innovation;

mobilize knowledge about innovation and innovation systems between the academic and public policy sectors; and

form the basis of dialogue between academic researchers, and science and innovation policy-makers in government.

Knowledge Synthesis Grants are not intended to support original research. They are intended to support the synthesis of existing research knowledge and the identification of knowledge gaps in a format that is accessible for a particular audience—in this case, primarily government policy-makers.

Supported knowledge syntheses should examine the experiences of various national and subnational funders and performers of Higher Education Research & Development (HERD)—both in Canada and abroad—with different strategies to ensure that public investment in HERD brings greater economic benefit. Supported syntheses should also examine the applicability of these strategies to the Canadian context.

Syntheses should focus on what the emerging best practices are in one or more of the following areas:

creating and sustaining effective networks, collaboration and linkages of higher education researchers with industry, communities, governments and others;

supporting cross-disciplinary research for greater innovation potential;

the transfer of knowledge from higher education institutions to industry, including through technology transfer; commercialization; management of intellectual property agreements; and the mobility of people trained in research; and

stimulating and supporting knowledge receptor capacity in industry, including the role of government-funded or private sector intermediaries in identifying opportunities for university research to support firm and market objectives and needs.

This call for proposals invites applications from researchers in various disciplines (including, but not limited to, economics, public policy, business, geography and sociology, and multidisciplinary approaches) that can inform and contribute to science and innovation policy.

Deadline: January 27, 2012
Grants are worth up to $25,000 over 14 weeks. Up to 12 grants will be awarded.

The Networks of Centres of Excellent (NCE) Secretariat is pleased to announce the launch of a competition to select one Canada-India Research Centre of Excellence.

In line with the objectives of Canada’s Science and Technology Strategy and the India Engagement Strategy, the CIRCE Initiative will raise Canada’s reputation as a research leader internationally by partnering with India on cutting-edge initiatives. The new Centre is expected to take advantage of existing partnerships to more rapidly achieve results that can be applied to productivity, economic growth, public policy or quality of life in both countries. Building on the government’s wider strategy to increase ties between Canada and India and enhance Canada’s international role as a research leader, the Centre will also provide training opportunities for students in both countries.

The CIRCE Initiative is a key element of the India Engagement Strategy. Through the India Engagement Strategy, the Government of Canada recognizes India as one of the world’s fastest growing economies and identifies a need to build and enhance the Canada-India bilateral relationship to create a more effective and beneficial partnership. The successful Centre application will receive $15 million over five years to create partnerships that accelerate the exchange of research results between Canada and India in an area of strategic importance to both countries. Funding for the initiative was announced in the 2011 federal Budget.

Please note that the deadline for a Notification of Intent (NOI) is January 9, 2012. The submission of the NOI is mandatory.

The Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia invites applications for up to two tenure-track Instructor I positions, effective July 1, 2012, with primary responsibilities in the Co-ordinated Arts Program (CAP).

Co-ordinated Arts is a year-long, multidisciplinary program designed around research themes, currently: Individual and Society, Global Citizenship, Law and Society, New Media and Society, Popular Culture, and PPE (Political Science, Philosophy, and Economics). The streams uniquely combine Faculty of Arts’ courses from the humanities, performing arts, and social sciences with courses created especially for CAP. For further details, visit http://cap.arts.ubc.ca.

Successful candidates recruited to CAP will be appointed in a department of disciplinary specialization and will be expected to teach sections of the CAP seminar as well as courses in his/her academic home unit (for a total teaching load of six 3-credit courses per year). The principal responsibilities of the position will be to teach the First Year Coordinated Arts seminar (ASTU 100; see UBC calendar description), help with academic co-ordination of streams, and contribute to leadership for CAP.

Successful candidates will have a PhD and a background in the study and teaching of writing in the disciplines; they will bring to the position innovative perspectives on the First-Year experience and a capacity for leadership in the teaching mission, as evidenced by experience and/or training. A record of professional involvement in writing pedagogy is preferred, as is experience in the teaching of literature. Evidence of teaching effectiveness is essential.

An Instructor I in later years is reviewed for tenure and promotion to Senior Instructor and will be required to show evidence of excellence in teaching and service, demonstrated educational leadership, distinction in the field of teaching and learning, sustained and innovative contributions to curriculum development, course design and other initiatives that advance the University’s ability to excel in its teaching and learning mandate. It is expected that Senior Instructors will keep abreast of current developments in their respective disciplines and in the field of teaching and learning. A Senior Instructor in the fifth and subsequent years in that rank may be reviewed for promotion to the rank of Professor of Teaching.

Applicants must provide the following: curriculum vitae, a concise statement of synergies with CAP, a summary of current and future teaching interests, course outlines for current teaching, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Applicants are also asked to arrange for 3 confidential letters of reference to be sent under separate cover. Inquiries may be directed to lois.nightingale@ubc.ca. All application materials should be sent to Prof. Sally Hermansen, Assistant Dean, Office of the Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of British Columbia, Buchanan A240 – 1866 Main Mall, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada V6T 1Z1.

Submissions received by January 6, 2012 will be given priority, although the positions will remain open until filled.

These webinars will focus on the features of the Partnership Funding Opportunities, and will offer advice on how to prepare an application. They will also provide a chance for participants to ask questions regarding SSHRC’s funding opportunities. The webinars are scheduled for the following dates and times (eastern time):
