Art History (Sessional Lecturers)

The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory invites applications for part-time sessional lecturers. In light of COVID-19, all Term 2 courses will be offered online and should be designed as such. Course delivery may be synchronous or asynchronous at the discretion of the instructor.

2020 Winter Term 2 (January 1 to April 30, 2021)

ARTH 226 (001) — Art, Colonialism, and Indigeneity

Tensions and conflicts resulting from the expansion of trade and encounters among cultures, ethnicities, and religious practices, explored in visual art and architecture from the sixteenth century to the advent of the modern era.

ARTH 341 (001) — 20th Century Art and Culture: The Postmodern

A critical examination of international visual art and culture from the 1950s to the present; the role of art in consumerist society and the emergence of postmodernism.

ARTH 361 (001) — Chinese Modern and Contemporary Art

Chinese art and its global entanglements from Qing Encounters to the 21st century.

CCST 502 (001) — Case Studies in Museum and Gallery Exhibitions

A case study approach to analyzing museum and gallery exhibitions that are historically significant either because they raised issues and stimulated public debate, or because of radical features that proved influential on subsequent exhibitions.

A minimum of a PhD (ABD) in Art History is required, and preference will be given to applicants with post-secondary teaching experience and a record that provides evidence of teaching effectiveness. Applicants from both inside and outside UBC are encouraged.

 All positions are subject to availability of funds and will be governed by UBC’s “Agreement on Conditions of Appointment for Sessional Faculty Members.” The current salary is $2,602.04 per credit, based off a nine credit term. Therefore, a regular three-credit course in our department would be remunerated at $7,806.12
