Associate or Full Professor in Critical Global Racial Studies (tenured)

The Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at UBC – Vancouver ( invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in Critical Global Racial Studies, which aligns with UBC’s decision to promote interdisciplinary, intersectional feminist, anti-colonial, anti-racist scholarship across the Faculty of Arts.

We welcome applications from senior and mid-career scholars in any discipline in the Humanities or Social Sciences, whose work critically addresses the structures and processes of colonial, racial, cis-heteropatriarchal and economic dynamics across institutional, structural and representational levels. The preferred areas of research and teaching include, but are not restricted to, incarceration, criminalization, and police brutality, involving BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), including immigrant and refugee populations; environmental racism; war and displacement, extraction and economic dispossession; transnational feminism, gender-sexual violence; queer of color studies, trans and gender-nonconforming studies.

We seek a dynamic scholar and collaborative colleague with demonstrated excellence or clear promise of excellence in teaching and in research, an outstanding record of scholarly achievement in the field, a record of excellence in teaching, and a track record of effective graduate level supervision. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, teaching, graduate supervision, and service.  Candidates hired into tenured positions must be approved by the GRSJ Promotion and Tenure Committee and the university’s Senior Appointments Committee before the appointment can be tenured. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Candidates from a variety of relevant Ph.D. programs in arts, social sciences or humanities are welcome to apply, including but not limited to: First Nations Studies, Gender and/or Transgender Studies, Sexuality Studies, Feminist Studies, Critical Race Studies, An intersectional Social Justice Studies emphasis on gender, sexuality, race, and anti-racist pedagogy, is required.

Anticipated position start date: July 1, 2021

The application dossier should include: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research, sample scholarly paper (3 samples), a brief statement of teaching interests and philosophy, evidence of teaching ability and effectiveness (e.g. sample syllabi and evaluations), and a one-page statement about your experience working with a diverse student body and your contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion.
