Sessional Position for the 2022-2023 Academic Year (2022W)

The School of Music is pleased to advertise a sessional position in Ensembles and Conducting for the 8 instructional months (September 2022 to April 2023) of the upcoming academic session, 2022W.
Preference will be given to applicants with a Doctorate or Masters degree in Conducting or comparable professional experience relevant to the position, and to those with a record of successful teaching. Courses may include:
MUSC 150C/550C – Concert Winds (Terms 1 & 2, Mon/Wed 6:00-8:00 p.m.)
Conduct the UBC Concert Winds, a wind band comprised of music majors and non-majors. Collaborate with the Director of Bands in artistic direction and programming of the season, and in supervision of graduate assistant conductors and student staff members. Manage rehearsals, performances, seating assignments, recruitment of players, and other logistics for the ensemble. Advanced study in conducting, expert knowledge of wind band literature, and experience leading university, secondary school, professional, and/or community ensembles required.
MUSC 150A/550A – Symphony Orchestra (Term 1, Tues/Thurs 4:00-7:00 p.m.)
Conduct the UBC Symphony Orchestra during term 1. Collaborate with the Director of Orchestras in artistic direction and programming of the season, and with the Director of Bands in supervision of graduate assistant conductors and student staff members. Manage rehearsals, performances, seating assignments, recruitment of players, and other logistics for the ensemble. Prepare and supervise rehearsals, leading one full concert cycle, and working with guest conductors for three of the four concerts in term 1. Advanced study in conducting, expert knowledge of orchestral literature, and experience leading university, secondary school, professional, and/or community ensembles required.
MUSC 549/593G – Studio Lessons in Orchestral Conducting (Term 1, TBA 2 hours/week)
In conjunction with teaching MUSC 150A/550A Symphony Orchestra in term 1, coach graduate students in rehearsal and performance of the UBC Symphony Orchestra and teach weekly private conducting lessons to two Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting students.
MUSC 305/506/606 – Orchestral Readings (Term 1, Fri 9:30-11:00 a.m.)
Teach MUSC 305/505/606, a laboratory course for orchestral performance majors with an emphasis on reading a large cross-section of standard orchestral repertoire. Collaborate with and supervise Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting students in an orchestral masterclass environment, providing live feedback to train players and conductors simultaneously. A thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire and conducting and rehearsal techniques is required.
MUSC MUSC 312 – Instrumental Conducting (Term 2, Tues/Thurs 10:00-11:30 a.m.)
Teach MUSC 312, an advanced instrumental conducting course required for students in the music education major and an elective option for other streams. Course content includes advanced conducting techniques, transposition, score preparation, rehearsal techniques, and band and orchestra repertory, utilizing materials provided as part of the UBC conducting curriculum. Class time provides student conducting opportunities, which are video-recorded for analysis and critique. Students receive feedback on their conducting in class, and on video critiques, so the position requires proficient knowledge and experience with video annotation technology, in addition to conducting pedagogy expertise.
MUSC 150A/550A – Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Term 2, Mon/Wed 3:00-6:00 p.m.)
Conduct the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble during term 2. Collaborate with the Director of Bands in artistic direction and programming of the season, and with the Director of Orchestras in supervision of graduate assistant conductors and student staff members. Manage rehearsals, performances, seating assignments, recruitment of players, and other logistics for the ensemble. Prepare and supervise rehearsals, leading two full concert cycles, and working with graduate assistant conductors in the UBC Bands. Advanced study in conducting, expert knowledge of wind band literature, and experience leading university, secondary school, professional, and/or community ensembles required.
MUSC 549/593H – Studio Lessons in Wind Conducting (Term 2, TBA 3 hours/week)
In conjunction with teaching MUSC 150A/550A Symphonic Wind Ensemble in term 2, coach graduate students in rehearsal and performance of the UBC Bands and teach weekly private conducting lessons to three Master of Music in Wind Conducting students.
