Call for proposals for HSBC Chair (term-limited) to support Asia policy engagement
The Institute of Asian Research in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, in the Faculty of Arts, at UBC-Vancouver invites applicants for the HSBC Chair in Asian Research to support Asia policy engagement. This is a two-year term-limited appointment, to be filled when an appropriate candidate is identified.
Selection criteria: This is an internal search, limited to tenured and tenure-track faculty at UBC and preference will be given to faculty members teaching in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. The Faculty of Arts is committed to addressing persistent inequities so women, visible minorities, Aboriginal persons, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities, are particularly encouraged to apply.
Candidates should be established academics with policy engagement experience and the ability to extend and deepen our engagement with Canadian policy communities, particularly the federal government and BC provincial government, as well as suitable Asian counterparts. The ability to mentor junior faculty in this engagement work is highly desirable. The goal of this appointment is to enhance the policy engagement work of the IAR and SPPGA on Asia policy, build our connections with government, and provide a model and guidance for other IAR/SPPGA faculty. As the HSBC Chair is funded by an endowment, it is intended to complement an existing position already core-funded by the faculty member’s academic home unit. The Chair appointment will include program and some research and teaching support (including one course release per year, subject to candidate’s home department approval), along with office space in the C.K. Choi Building and administrative assistance from the Institute of Asian Research in the C.K. Choi Building.
How to apply: Interested candidates are requested to submit a brief letter of application including a description of planned activities and how they might contribute to building SPPGA’s capacity to sustain and extend these contacts and activities. Please include a short CV. Submission deadline: October 22, 2020. Send materials with the subject line “HSBC Chair proposal” to Timothy Cheek, Director, Institute of Asian Research, c/o karen.jew@ubc.ca.
