The Infant Studies Centre at UBC is a dynamic, interdisciplinary research centre in the Department of Psychology. The focus of the research in the Centre is to understand the biases infants bring to language learning, and how these change as a function of age and language experience. Our overall goal is to understand the link between perceptual development and mature language use. We study normally developing children from both mono- and multilingual homes, and children at risk for language impairment. We use both behavioral and neural imaging techniques. We are currently looking for a Research Associate to lead the work from my NSERC grant, using EEG/ERP to study critical periods in speech perception development, as well as the role of sleep in consolidation.
We require a person with considerable experience with EEG and its analysis, deep knowledge of infant speech perception, and sufficient knowledge of neuroscience to understand and study how EEG oscillatory activity relates to plasticity circuits in the sensory cortices, and how it relates to sleep states and memory consolidation. Skill in computational decoding of neural signals is also an asset. The position will also entail overseeing undergraduate and graduate students to help on the project, .
Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Psychology or related field, as well as a minimum of seven years’ experience working in a research setting, resulting in a solid publication record. The position also requires a high level of comfort working with parents, infants and young children. Also, applicants must have at least five years’ experience working in a multi-cultural environment, and a working knowledge of issues in the field of developmental disorders.
