The Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Medical Anthropology to begin July 1, 2022.
We seek to hire an exceptional emerging scholar who is broadly trained, with evidence of innovative theoretical and ethnographic engagement. The theoretical focus is open, but we especially welcome those with expertise in the anthropology of health, culture, medicine and well-being in cross-cultural contexts; gender and reproductive health; biopolitics and the lived realities of structural and health inequalities. We seek a colleague whose work would complement existing departmental strengths, and while the geographic area is open, we especially aim to build expertise in Asia, including South Asia and East Asia, and the Pacific.
The Department has a long tradition of community engagement and collaboration with the people with whom we conduct research, and we also welcome approaches informed by critical medical anthropology . We are actively seeking to recruit from a diverse pool of applicants. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous scholars and from minority groups underrepresented in post-secondary institutions in North America.
Candidates must be able to teach general courses in cultural anthropology along with courses in their area of expertise both at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentor undergraduate and graduate students. They must also have a demonstrated record of outstanding teaching and an evident trajectory of an excellent research program. Candidates will be expected to do research in their area of expertise and provide service to the university. The start date for the position would be July 1, 2022. While a Ph.D. in Anthropology is preferred, applicants who will have successfully defended the Ph.D. dissertation by the position start date will be considered.
