Syntax (Assistant Professor, tenure-track)

The Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Syntax to begin July 1, 2020, with appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.


Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field, with a research specialization in formal syntax. Research expertise in the interface(s) between syntax and other domains is an asset. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a record of or strong potential for high-quality research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs and to participate in graduate supervision. The ideal candidate will be able to teach not only courses in theoretical syntax, but also introductory or general linguistics courses.


We especially encourage applicants whose research involves a focus on empirical issues and involves primary data collection, particularly involving fieldwork but also possibly including experimental research. A research focus on under-studied languages — especially the languages of Africa, the Americas, or Asia — is highly desirable.

The Department covers a broad range of subfields in linguistics, and approaches these from a variety of perspectives, with particular strengths in formal-theoretical linguistics, fieldwork, experimental linguistics and language acquisition, and a developing research and teaching capacity in computational linguistics. The Department is a centre for the study of the Indigenous languages of the Americas with a particular focus on the First Nations languages of western Canada, and has a long history of work on African languages. Applicants are asked to provide: a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements (including evidence of teaching effectiveness), a one-page statement about their experience working with a diverse student body and their contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion, no more than three samples of published or unpublished scholarship, along with any additional supporting documents (max. file size 3MB per document).
