The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory (AHVA) at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, invites applications for a Lecturer appointment in visual art commencing as early as July 1, 2021.
This is a full-time position for a term of up to three years, which entails a probationary first year. Lecturer positions are appointments without review (i.e. non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching credits (i.e., eight three-credit courses) and service assignments normally based on a three-three load in the Winter sessions and two courses in the Summer sessions. In cases where extraordinary additional administrative responsibilities are assigned by the Head, a three-credit teaching reduction may be granted.
The department seeks an individual who pursues a photographic or lens-based practice against a strong background of contemporary, art-historical and theoretical concerns. We are particularly interested in individuals with an expanded photographic practice in digital, interactive, installation and/or other experimental, emerging fields.
The successful candidate will be expected to have a record of teaching at the undergraduate level with innovative pedagogical approaches. This role also carries the service assignment of chairing the AHVA Gallery Committee and overseeing exhibitions and operations. Previous experience in gallery, exhibition, and/or curatorial roles will be considered an asset.
Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications:
- digital and analog photographic techniques and practices
- an MFA degree, however, in exceptional cases the equivalent combination of education and professional practice may be considered
- an active exhibition record or alternatively, a significant contribution to an emerging field of practice
- a serious engagement with contemporary art practice, theory and critical discourse
- post-secondary teaching experience and the capacity to teach all levels of undergraduate courses in your area of specialty
- ability to teach and to lead discussions on contemporary art and critical theory with students across all levels
The University of British Columbia—located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people—is one of the largest and most distinguished universities in Canada. Our visual art faculty members have wide-ranging theoretical concerns in both conceptual and traditional practice. The visual art program partners with strong art history and curatorial studies programs to provide unique studio programs for its students, who may pursue a BFA, a BA major or minor in visual art, or an MFA in visual art. We are a participant in the Bachelor of Media Studies program. The department is associated with a leading contemporary art gallery, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, and the internationally recognized Museum of Anthropology. We also have a relationship with the Centre for Digital Media.

Given the uncertainty caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, applicants must be prepared to conduct interviews remotely if circumstances require. A successful applicant may be asked to consider an offer containing a deadline without having been able to make an in-person visit to campus if travel and other restrictions are still in place.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
