Arts One Program (internal call for tenure-stream faculty, starting Fall 2018)

Call for Tenure Stream Faculty to Teach in Arts One Starting Fall 2018 – [“GROUP B”]

The Arts One program at UBC is seeking tenure-stream faculty members to start in the Fall of 2018. We are seeking expressions of interest, and would then work with the faculty member and their department Head to determine if there would be a good fit with the teaching team and if the department can release the faculty member for the duration of their time with Arts One. We would ideally like to find people who can commit to one or more years of teaching in Arts One. Faculty in all disciplines are welcome.

The Arts One program is a team-taught, interdisciplinary program for first-year students in the Faculty of Arts. Students earn 18 credits in Arts One, over two terms: six credits each in first-year English, History and Philosophy. There are two teaching teams of 4-5 faculty members, each with its own theme and reading list from various historical periods and cultural traditions. Each week there is a two-hour lecture on a book, a film, a set of poems, or some other work. Then, students meet in groups of no more than 20 for seminar discussions on that work, twice a week. There are also weekly tutorial meetings of four students plus their seminar leader, to do peer review of students’ essays (each student writes twelve 1,500-2,000 word essays and a final capstone paper in the course of the year).

The four- or five-member teaching team works together on a theme and reading list, and each member of the teaching team is responsible for four or five of the two-hour lectures during the year.

For the Fall of 2018, we are seeking tenure-stream faculty members for a team that already has the following confirmed members:

Robert Crawford, Political Science

John Barker, Anthropology

Brianne Orr Alvarez, French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies

The theme for next year will be “Authority and Resistance” (Tap here for theme). We would work with the new faculty member(s) to develop a reading list for next year, beginning Fall 2018.

Please indicate expressions of interest in an email to Tom Kemple, Chair of Arts One, at kemple@ubc.ca, by November 15, 2017. If you have any questions you’d like to ask about Arts One, or teaching in the program, please send those to Tom as well. You are also welcome to check out current themes and reading lists on our course website at http://artsone.arts.ubc.ca/themes/201718-2/.
