In the first part of this talk\, Dr. Nesr ine Basheer engages in a conversation with Dr. Lama Nassif about recent res earch in Arabic Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and ways to translate fin dings from this research into pedagogical applications in the Arabic classr oom. The second part will be a conversation with attendees where we think\, as practitioners\, researchers\, and curriculum developers\, about the mos t urgent questions that would help advance research and practice in Arabic pedagogy.
Dr. Lama Nassif is an Associate Teaching Professor\, Arabic Studies\, at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. Lama Nassif is Associate Professor of Arabic Studies at Williams College\, where she teaches Arabic \, second language acquisition (SLA)\, and sociolinguistics. She was also Q ueen Rania Foundation – Education Endowment Foundation Teaching and Learnin g Resources Fellow (2022-2023) in Amman\, Jordan. Her research interests in clude noticing and attention in second language (L2) development\, sociolin guistic development in L2 Arabic acquisition\, and the interface between SL A research and L2 pedagogy. Lama has taught Arabic at the Middlebury Instit ute of International Studies\, The University of Texas at Austin\, Middlebu ry College\, and Williams College\, and was a visiting scholar at The Unive rsity of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Nesrine Basheer is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. She is an applied linguist\, a specialist in teaching Arabic as a foreign language\, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her rese arch interests include the teaching and assessment of writing\, cohesion an d coherence in Arabic first- and second-language writing\, and the multidia lectal approach to teaching Arabic. Nesrine has taught Arabic at the Americ an University in Cairo\, the United Nations\, the University of Texas at Au stin\, the University of Maryland\, and the University of Sydney.
