Designing Your Future – Career Exploration Studio

The Designing Your Future – Career Exploration Studio is a small pilot program that will consist of four virtual workshops and two virtual workplace experiences with alumni (Arts graduates). The series will help participants explore the experiences gained through an Arts degree and their relevance to the world of work. Detailed descriptions of each component can be found below.

This opportunity is open to undergraduate Arts students in all year levels. Participants can expect an interactive, cohort-based experience through which they will become more self-aware and develop professional skills. Those who participate in all components will be recognized with a Certificate of Completion for the Designing Your Future – Career Exploration Studio, which can be used to demonstrate their motivation and follow-through to prospective employers.

Workshops

Tuesday, February 22, 2022

Morning (10:00 AM ~ 11:30 AM): Do you feel stuck or unsure when considering what career means to you, and how it fits into the bigger picture of who you are and what you want your future to look and feel like? This session will provide tools for exploring those questions in creative ways.

Afternoon (12:30 PM ~ 2:00 PM): Discover what “design thinking” is, and how its principles can help you build a joyful life and find gainful employment. Imagine three different potential futures for yourself and draw upon your peers’ ideas to identify ways you can start working towards one.

Morning (10:00 AM ~ 11:30 AM): Meet an Arts graduate working in a field that interests you! Hear about their career journey to date as well as their current role and work environment. Ample time for questions will be built in.

Afternoon (12:30 PM ~ 2:00 PM): Learn how to craft a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile that effectively describe your experiences and strengths, as well as how these make you a strong candidate. This workshop will guide you through the processes of extracting value from, and making meaning of, something you’ve accomplished as an Arts student.

Morning (10:00 AM ~ 11:30 AM): Explore what the “hidden job market” means and how you can use your understanding of it to conduct a more effective job search. Learn strategies for building your network before and after graduation, and for interview preparation. Practice your responses to sample interview questions with peers.

Afternoon (12:30 PM ~ 2:00 PM): Meet an Arts graduate working in a field that interests you! Hear about their career journey to date as well as their current role and work environment. Ample time for questions will be built in.
+ Synthesize your learning through reflection and group discussion, and provide feedback on the program to improve its future iterations.
