Media Training Workshop

Please note that this session is limited to faculty members in Arts.

UBC Media Relations is hosting a media training workshop for UBC Arts faculty. This session will help you learn how to make your ideas and research accessible to a general audience and provide you with simple tools to get your message across effectively.

Learning Outcomes:

  • How to communicate your research for a lay audience through the media
  • What makes an item newsworthy
  • How to develop good key messages and deliver them
  • How to handle unexpected questions that come up during an interview

  • 1:30-2:30pm: Presentation
  • 2:30-3:00pm: Practice exercises that involve developing and articulating key messages in mock interview sessions with your peers.

What to Bring:

  • The abstract for a piece of research you’ve done in the past few years that carries an element of public interest. Even if it’s just a small amount of public interest, that’s fine – we’re only practicing.

  • A news topic or story from the past year, about which you would have felt qualified (in terms of academic expertise) to comment to a reporter.
