In a poetry slam\, participants perform their poetry on a stage
before an audience. While the format will be traditional\, UBC’s inaugur
al Multilingual Poetry Slam will feature a combination of languages\, d
rawing from the multilingualism of the UBC student body as well as the many
languages taught on campus.
This event will feature two t
racks. The first category will be for original poetry written in the target
language\, while the second category will showcase student translations of
poems that celebrate multilingualism. Participants will first read the Eng
lish translation of their poem and then perform the poem in a different lan
guage or in a combination of languages. For original poems performed in the
target language\, participants should deliver either a translation or a sh
ort summary of the poem’s content in English.
First and se
cond prizes will be awarded to the top performances\, the best poems\, and
the most compelling translations presented.
