Arts faculty named 2025 Distinguished University Scholars



Dr. Evan Thompson (Philosophy) and Dr. Kiran Soma (Psychology) have been named Distinguished University Scholars, one of UBC’s highest honours for faculty excellence.

Conferred by the President, the award recognizes outstanding scholars whose innovative and internationally recognized work has made significant impact in their fields. Distinguished University Scholars excel in research and teaching, mentor diverse students, and lead original, high-quality programs that model equity and inclusion.

Dr. Evan Thompson
Professor, Department of Philosophy

Dr. Thompson’s research focuses on the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, particularly embodied cognition and the neuroscience of consciousness. He is also interested in phenomenology and cross-cultural philosophy, with a focus on South Asian and East Asian traditions, including Indian philosophy and Buddhism.


Dr. Kiran Soma
Professor, Department of Psychology

Dr. Soma studies how hormones influence neural circuits, behaviour, and immune function. His research interests include behavioural neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, neuroethology, as well as the effects of diet, exercise, and stress.
