UBC announced today that Asian Studies professor Dr. Rumee Ahmed has been appointed Vice-Provost, International, pro tem, in the Offices of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan, effective September 15, 2022.
The Vice-Provost, International, provides leadership for the achievement of UBC’s goals and objectives related to international engagement, global partnerships and initiatives, and advancing UBC’s strategic international priorities.
Dr. Ahmed joined UBC in 2011 as Assistant Professor of Islamic Law in the Faculty of Arts. He was appointed as Associate Professor in 2015 and Professor in 2020. In 2021, he was named Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Theology and Ethics. Between 2016 and 2020, Dr. Ahmed served as Associate Dean, Strategy and Innovation, for the Faculty of Arts, where he oversaw international agreements and programs. Additionally, he was interim Associate Dean, Students (from July 2019 to May 2020) and interim Associate Dean, Research (from March 2019 to July 2019).
Dr. Ahmed is the author of Sharia Compliant: A User’s Guide to Hacking Islamic Law (Stanford U Press, 2018) and Narratives of Islamic Legal Theory (Oxford U Press, 2012), as well as the co-editor of The Oxford Handbook on Islamic Law (Oxford U Press, 2019).
