Sociology (Lecturer)

The Department of Sociology ( at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Sociology, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2018.

We expect to fill this position for a three-year term (which entails a probationary first year). Lecturer positions are appointments without review (i.e., non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funding and demonstration of excellence in teaching, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill service duties as assigned by the Head and to teach undergraduate courses that are part of the Sociology program.  Teaching will be assigned based on the needs of the Department and the responsibilities for this position will include sections of introductory courses as well as more advanced courses in the undergraduate curriculum. The prospective candidates would be expected to teach first-year courses including Sociology 101: Social Interaction and Culture; Sociology 102 Inequality and Social Change. Candidates should also be able to teach a range of upper-level courses from our current curriculum.

We seek applicants with a PhD in Sociology, but will also consider those who have completed the requirements for the PhD degree by the position start date. We are seeking to engage exceptional teachers who have experience teaching undergraduate sociology courses.  We have a particular interest in applicants with strong commitments and demonstrated potential to achieving excellence in teaching and academic supervision of undergraduate students. The teaching load for the position will be 24 credits per year, distributed typically as a 3/3 course load in the Winter session and 2 courses in the Summer. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching and service.
