Sophie

Year and program: Fourth-year, Economics major and Commerce minor

Where is home for you? Wuxi, Jiangsu China

What three adjectives best describe you?

Diligent, thoughtful and reliable

What extracurricular activities have you been involved with (UBC related or not)?

I volunteer as a Peer Assistant at the Economics Learning Center. I also occasionally play the piano at my local church.

What is your best study strategy/tip?

Do lots of practice problems, it really helps the material stick and makes it easier to identify areas that need more work. When I get stuck on a question, I would go back to my lecture notes to review the concepts more carefully. I also make an effort to attend TA office hours, usually for help with homework or projects. I don’t go to every session, but I’ve noticed I do significantly better in courses when I make the effort to go. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help!

If you could travel back in time to your first year at UBC, what is one thing you would do differently?

I would have participated in more club activities and networking events, and made a greater effort to engage with the UBC community. In my first year, I was too shy to attend events unless I had a friend with me, which limited the opportunities I took advantage of. Looking back, I realize that stepping out of my comfort zone earlier would have helped me build more connections, discover new interests, and feel more confident in both academic and social settings.
