Year and program: Second-year, intended International Relations major, creative writing minor, and certificate in climate studies and action
Where is home for you? New Jersey, USA
What three adjectives best describe you?
Adventurous, optimistic, compassionate
What extracurricular activities have you been involved with (UBC related or not)?
I’ve had a lot of fun participating in events with the film society, baking club, IRSA, and SISU at UBC. I also love to read and write in my free time. When I’m not on campus I’m likely out hiking or cafe hopping!
What is your best study strategy/tip?
Go to a library or a cafe. I’ve always found it so much easier to focus when I’m around other people working or studying. I also recommend doing 50 minutes of focus with a 10 minute break every hour, gives you enough time to get stuff done without distractions while also not wearing yourself out. And doing this is super easy because there are plenty of pre-made timers and videos that use the method (I like Merve).
If you could travel back in time to your first year at UBC, what is one thing you would do differently?
First coming to UBC, I stressed a lot about having enough time to study and not wanting to fall behind in classes, but getting involved on campus and taking advantage of all the incredible opportunities you get as a uni student is also really important. And while all the club options were a bit overwhelming on Imagine Day, I wish I had picked one or two to commit to. I started appreciating the clubs a lot more in my second term and they’re a great way to meet people, try out new things, and destress. While still, of course, leaving room to study. Outside of clubs, there are also so many UBC traditions like Storm the Wall (highly recommend) and, if you’re living on campus, free dorm events that are fun and great ways to push yourself a little outside of your comfort zone. The biggest thing I would do differently would be staying open to all of these opportunities and trying to get more involved sooner.
