Hiromi’s Sonicwonder Concert

Hiromi, the dynamic jazz pianist, brings her vivacious energy to the stage. Hailing from Japan and mentored by jazz greats Ahmad Jamal and Richard Evans, her performances blend swing, groove, and ragtime, bridging pop-jazz and blues. With a career spanning genres since her debut album “Another Mind,” Hiromi continues to push boundaries, now leading the electrified band “Sonicwonder” featuring Adam O’Farrill, Hadrien Feraud, and Gene Coye. Her ability to fuse intricate melodies and styles makes her a standout in modern jazz.

Visual + Material Culture Research Seminar Series: A Finer and More Certain Mirror: Painting the Body in the Nineteenth Century

This interdisciplinary seminar series is for anyone with interests in visual and material culture across different departments at UBC and beyond. The seminar provides an opportunity to share research and exchange ideas, usually followed by conversations over a drink at Koerner’s Pub. Open to students, staff, faculty and community members in and around UBC.
The seminars will be held in-person at MOA.

Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour with MOA Curator of Indigenous Programming Damara Jacobs-Petersen and MOA Education Coordinator Amina Chergui.
How do people learn – and unlearn – in museums? In this tour, MOA Curator of Indigenous Programming Damara Jacobs-Petersen and MOA Education Coordinator Amina Chergui will illustrate the educational power of artworks and belongings held in museums.
This event will begin with an introduction in the Community Lounge, followed by a tour of selected works in MOA’s Multiversity Galleries. Visitors will engage hands-on with the teaching collection belongings in MOA’s Learning Lab and participate in a reflective art-making activity.
Tours are 90 minutes long.

Anoushka Shankar Concert

Anoushka Shankar, a nine-time Grammy nominee, is renowned for her exceptional fusion music. Trained by her father, sitar master Ravi Shankar, she swiftly established herself in Hindustani classical music and beyond, even exploring flamenco and film scoring. Her sitar virtuosity blends timeless techniques with modern sounds, attracting collaborators like Sting and Norah Jones. With a new quintet including Arun Ghosh, Sarathy Korwar, Pirashanna Thevarajah, and Tom Farmer, Shankar presents a dynamic sound, performing from her recent mini-album and reimagining past releases, offering an inviting journey through diverse musical realms.
