Welcome to the wonderland of Mathemalchemy, where math is transforming.
Both art and math illuminate and describe our world, and have the power to inspire our imaginations. This installation invites you to let go of preconceptions or classroom experiences about art or math, and to explore with an open mind. Feel free to wander, observe, and enjoy.
To learn more about the different sections, you can use your phone to scan the QR codes on the panels in the gallery. They’ll take you to the Mathemalchemy website explaining the mathematical concepts, fabrication details, and stories about what you are seeing (why is the cat baking those particular cookies? what are the squirrels doing?).
In this mysterious underwater world, height and gravity are no longer barriers. You can explore the shallow desert-like barrens in search of Pacific spiny lumpsuckers hiding on abandoned mooring lines, or venture deeper to visit a zoanthid gallery with a giant lingcod. You can play peek-a-boo with the locals living in sponges or venture beyond recreational limits in search of Gorgonian coral reefs. And no matter where you go, you’re free of weight; as if everything is moving in slow motion until a group of playful sea lions swiftly dash past you… or you run low on air.
“Ghostly Makers” exhibition features artists expressing diasporic identities using craft. Inspired by Avery Gordon’s “haunting” concept, the art gives voice to marginalized experiences. Carmen Levy-Milne, a cultural worker with a Jewish settler background, contributes to the show’s reparative, decolonial, and critical responses. The exhibition also delves into its space’s history and contemporary collection methods to explore cultural identity and memory.
“Shake the Earth!” is a rhythmic celebration merging taiko drummers and percussive dancers, specifically Uzume Taiko and Vancouver Tap Dance Society members. The performance explores the transformation of sound into music and patterns into rhythm, taking the audience on a seasonal journey from the lively energy of the midday sun to the contemplative ambiance of moonlit shadows. Through this collaboration, the event seeks to captivate and inspire dance.
