Three Arts faculty receive Dean of Arts Educational Leadership and Innovation Award

Arts faculty members Dr. Hessam Dehghani, Dr. Bronwen Tate and Dr. John Vigna have received the Dean of Arts Educational Leadership (EL) and Innovation Award.

Now in its third year, this award is open to all Assistant and Associate Professors of Teaching in the Faculty of Arts. The award offers EL faculty time to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning that may not typically be funded through other UBC competitions.

Warmest congratulations to Dr. Dehghani, Dr. Tate and Dr. Vigna on their awards!

Dr. Hessam Dehghani

Assistant Professor of Teaching (Persian), Department of Asian Studies

Dr. Dehghani plans to further develop the quality of the Persian program which has seen significant growth under his stewardship. This initiative aims to establish a robust and standardized assessment framework and enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of the UBC Persian Program. These developments closely align with the Faculty’s overarching goals of transformative learning and elevating student support.

Dr. Bronwen Tate

Assistant Professor of Teaching and Undergraduate Chair, School of Creative Writing

Dr. John Vigna

Associate Professor of Teaching and Pedagogy Chair, School of Creative Writing

Tate and Vigna are co-authoring a creative writing pedagogy book, A Creative Writing Teacher’s Companion. Guided by progressive and inclusive principles, their book will address a gap in the current landscape of literature on creative writing teaching strategies across post-secondary contexts. The book will offer tools for designing courses that scaffold growth, exercises that challenge and inspire writing students, assessments examples that support learning, and techniques for building community. The initiative closely aligns with the transformative learning goals outlined in the Faculty of Arts and Student Strategic Plans, especially the principles of inclusive and equitable learning.
