Film Production Alumna Nimisha Mukerji’s feature documentary Tempest Storm was chosen to premiere at Hot Docs 2016, North America’s largest documentary festival, offers an outstanding selection of over 200 films from Canada and around the world to Toronto audiences of more than 200,000 running April 28 to May 8.

About Tempest Storm:

Tempest Storm was mistress to both Elvis and JFK, and became an international star on the stage and screen in the 1950s. At the age of 87 she is considered to be the greatest living exotic dancer, but her success came at a great personal cost. Exploring her dramatic rise to fame in burlesque and her swift fall from grace after pursuing an interracial marriage, “Tempest Storm” is a feature documentary that bares all to tell the controversial life story of an American sex icon.

BIO: An award-winning director, Nimisha’s debut feature 65_RedRoses was one of the first official selections for Oprah Winfrey’s Documentary Club on OWN US. The New York Times hailed the film as “illuminating… an affecting, unnerving portrait of one family’s encounter with the harshest of realities.” It went on to win top prizes at the Hot Docs International Film Festival (the Don Haig Award), Arizona International Film Festival (Best Documentary), Omaha International Film Festival (Audience Award Best Documentary), and Mendocino International Film Festival (Audience & Emerging Filmmaker Award). At the 2010 Banff World Television Awards, 65_RedRoses won Best Canadian Program following it’s broadcast premiere on CBC’s The Passionate Eye. The film is being distributed by PBS International and Ro*co and is available on Netflix US. Nimisha’s second feature documentary Blood Relative, screened in competition at the Hot Docs International Film Festival ’13, and won Audience Awards at VIFF ‘12 and SAIFF NYC ’12 (presented by HBO). The film had its broadcast premiere on Knowledge Network’s Storyville and received 3 Canadian Screen Award nominations (Canada’s version of the Emmy’s), including Best Social/Political Documentary and Best Direction in a Documentary. Nimisha is an alumnus of the CTV National Fellowship Program ’10 as well as TIFF’s Talent Lab ’11. She is currently producing and directing the feature documentary Tempest Storm, which won Westdoc LA’s Pitchfest ’13 and was officially selected to pitch at TIFF Industry ’13 and Hot Docs Forum ’14.
