In order to earn your degree, you must complete a minimum of 120 credits, including outside credits, upper-level credits, and the Arts credit minimum.
A minimum of 50% of total degree credits, 50% of upper-level degree credits, and 50% of upper-level credits for each program (honours, major, or minor) must be completed while registered as a student in the Faculty of Arts at UBC.
Arts credit minimum
A minimum of 72 of the 120 credits required for the Bachelor of Arts degree must be Arts credits, except when the completion of your program requires more than 48 credits outside of Arts.
Arts credit courses are identified in the UBC Calendar course descriptions as those offered by the Faculty of Arts, or as transfer credit deemed to be Arts. See Degree Navigator or consult Arts Academic Advising if you are unsure about how your credits are classified.
In order to accommodate required program credits, the Arts Credit Minimum for students who complete a BA Major or Honours program in Mathematics or Computer Science is reduced, but students are expected to complete as many Arts credits as possible within the 120 credits required for the degree.
When you use one upper-level course to meet requirements in each of your two program options (majors or major/minor), you are “double counting.” Depending on your program choices, there are strict limits to how many credits you may double count.
While a course may be counted twice to meet two different program requirements, you cannot count a course twice for degree-required credits.
For example, if you are doing a double major (60 upper-level required credits) and take a course that fulfills program requirements for both majors, you may use it to double count, but you only receive credits for the course once.
Outside credits (electives)
You must complete a minimum number of credits outside your program option (Honours, major, double major, major/minor). Courses that fulfill the outside credit requirement are often referred to as electives.
You must complete a minimum number of upper-level credits (courses numbered 300 and above). This number varies according to the degree and whether or not you are completing an honours program.
Credit requirements by degree
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
In order to earn your degree, you must complete at least 120 BA-eligible credits. For most programs, at least 72 credits must be taken within the Faculty of Arts.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) second degree studies
As a second degree student, you must complete a minimum of 60 UBC credits in order to earn your degree. These credits must include no fewer than 48 upper-level credits, all of which must be taken while registered in the Bachelor of Arts degree program. A minimum of 36 credits must be taken within the Faculty of Arts.
Students are not permitted to undertake a second-degree program that overlaps significantly with studies undertaken for a previously granted degree. Contact the department to find out if your second degree focus is possible.
Faculty of Arts will accept 12 previously completed unclassified credits, but these will not apply to the requirement of 48 upper-level credits
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
In order to earn your degree, you must complete at least 120 BFA-eligible credits. Of these 120 credits, at least 72 credits must be taken within the Faculty of Arts.
The language, literature, and science requirements are not required as part of the BFA program. However, the writing and research requirement must be fulfilled.
If you entered your BFA program in 2016 Winter or earlier, please refer to the archived UBC calendar for your degree requirements.
In addition to their BFA program, BFA students are permitted to complete any honours, major or minor program available to BA students, including those outside of the Faculty of Arts. If the desired program is not available under the BFA in the SSC, contact Arts Academic Advising.
Students majoring in both a BFA discipline and a BA discipline (double major) may choose to graduate with either a BFA or BA degree provided they have completed the overall degree requirements of their chosen degree.
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) second degree studies
As a second degree student, you must complete a minimum of 60 UBC credits in order to earn your degree. These credits must include no fewer than 48 upper-level credits, all of which must be taken while registered in the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program. A minimum of 36 credits must be taken within the Faculty of Arts.
Bachelor of International Economics (BIE)
In order to earn your degree, you must complete at least 120 BIE-eligible credits, including a minimum of upper-level and outside credits. This number varies depending on whether or not you choose to complete a minor in addition to the BIE.
BIE students may complete any minor program available to BA students, including those outside of the Faculty of Arts, with the exception of the minor in Economics and minor in Commerce.
If the desired program is not available as a program option under the BIE on the SSC and you are in the correct year level to declare the program, contact Arts Academic Advising to have the program declared or to inquire about admission.
Bachelor of Media Studies (BMS)
In order to earn your degree, you must complete at least 120 BMS-eligible credits, including a minimum at the upper level. That number depends on whether or not you choose to complete a minor in addition to the BMS.
Faculty of Arts degree requirements (Writing and Research, Language, Literature, and Science) are not required as a part of the BMS degree program as these requirements are already built into the core curriculum.
